Shipping something valuable? FedEx® Authenticated Delivery is a paid upgrade that adds an extra layer of security. Your package is only handed to the recipient holding the unique QR code. This helps protect against fraud, misdelivery, and theft. Because shipping should be speedy and secure, every step of the way.
How FedEx Authenticated Delivery works
The shipper selects FedEx Authenticated Delivery when they create a shipment.
The recipient receives a secure QR code via FedEx notification.
A person with the FedEx QR code must be present at delivery.
The driver scans the FedEx QR code to complete the delivery.

- FedEx Authenticated Delivery is available with select FedEx® expedited services. See the FedEx Service Guide for current eligibility requirements, restrictions, and availability.
- You or someone at your delivery address must be present with the unique QR code.
- You cannot leave the FedEx QR code for the driver. It must be presented to the driver for scanning and validation before the delivery can be completed.

Explore FedEx signature options
The shipper chooses the signature level when they create a label. Here’s what each option means for the recipient. These signature options cannot be combined with FedEx Authenticated Delivery.
Adult Signature Required (ASR)
FedEx requires a signature from someone 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID, or other identification customarily accepted by local authorities. Examples of ASR include alcohol, pharmaceuticals, firearms, and other controlled items. Electronic signatures aren’t accepted.
Direct Signature Required (DSR)
FedEx delivers only to the address on the label, and someone there must sign to receive it. If no one is available, FedEx will reattempt delivery or hold the package at a nearby FedEx location.
Indirect Signature Required (ISR)
Someone at or near the delivery address can sign, like a neighbor or building manager. Recipients can authorize release without anyone present via FedEx Delivery Manager® or by signing a door tag. Electronic signature is available for ISR.
No Signature Required (NSR)
NSR isn’t applied by FedEx automatically. The shipper can choose it if avoiding a missed delivery matters most—for example, when shipping legal or time-sensitive documents. The FedEx driver may leave the package at the address, no matter the circumstances.
FedEx ID scanning for Adult Signature Required deliveries
FedEx uses scanning technology to electronically verify age and capture the recipient’s name. No additional personal data (such as driver’s license number, birth date, or home address) is recorded or stored.
Acceptable IDs for scanning in the U.S.:
- Government-issued ID
- State-issued driver’s license
If a recipient declines FedEx ID scanning, the driver will manually verify their age by date of birth. The driver will also record their first initial and last name.
Not going to be home to sign?
Enroll in FedEx Delivery Manager® for more control over when and where you receive packages.
- Request to hold your package at a nearby FedEx location for free. We’ll hold it for up to 10 days for standard shipments or up to 5 days for expedited shipments.
- Redirect an NSR or ISR package to another address or schedule a different delivery time. A fee may apply.
- Sign electronically if your shipment requires only an indirect signature.
Received a door tag?
If we attempted delivery and no one was available, we left a door tag with your options. You can track your package, schedule a redelivery, or pick it up at a FedEx location.
Download the FedEx® Mobile app and scan the barcode on the door tag.
Track your package on fedex.com, using the tracking number on the bottom of the tag.
Text FOLLOW and your door tag number to 48773.
Sign the back of the door tag (indirect signature only) to authorize next-business-day delivery.
If a label is applied to the back of the door tag, FedEx was unable to leave the package due to signature requirements or safety concerns. The package has been taken to a nearby FedEx location for pickup.
If a label is applied to the back of the door tag, FedEx was unable to leave the package due to signature requirements or safety concerns. The package has been taken to a nearby FedEx location for pickup.

FedEx signature options
No. The shipper selects the signature requirement when creating a label. Some shipments always require a signature by FedEx policy, regardless of what the shipper picks. These include alcohol, pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials, and firearms.
- Adult Signature Required (ASR): A recipient 21+ at the delivery address with a valid government-issued photo ID must be present to sign.
- Direct Signature Required (DSR): Someone at the delivery address must sign.
- Indirect Signature Required (ISR): A neighbor, building manager, or someone nearby can sign.
NSR is selected by the shipper, not applied by FedEx automatically. When NSR is set, FedEx will leave the package regardless of circumstances. It’s primarily used when a missed delivery would cause a problem (legal documents, time-sensitive materials, or situations where a reattempt is not an option). Note that once the package is left, the shipper assumes responsibility for it.
You can select a signature option under the Special Services section when creating your label in FedEx Ship Manager® or at a FedEx location. Options are only available for destinations where the selected service is enabled. Fees may apply.
Fees may apply for indirect, direct, and adult signature requirements. No signature required has no additional fee. View current fees and surcharges.
If the shipment requires an indirect signature, a neighbor, building manager, or other person nearby may sign. If no one is available, you can sign electronically through FedEx Delivery Manager. Electronic signature is not available for direct or adult signature required shipments.
Yes. Signature options are currently available for 60+ destination countries. These may change over time, but your automation solutions will automatically be updated with new information.
