What is a Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC)?

Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) meaning

A NVOCC is a company that provides all the services of an ocean carrier but does not own ships. Acting as middlemen, a NVOCC connects shippers with vessel operators using its own contract with shipping lines, to rent space in containers.

These companies are especially helpful for small and medium businesses that may not require an entire container to ship their goods.

What is the difference between a NVOCC and a Freight Forwarder?

Similarity

  • Both are transportation middlemen who help shippers move containers.

Difference

  • NVOCCs act as both ocean carriers and shippers, while Freight Forwarders act as the shippers' agent.
  • NVOCCs handle port to port ocean freight transportation, while Freight Forwarders manage different routes of transportation (ocean, air, or inland) until a certain point. After that, the importer's or buyer's agent takes over.

Does a NVOCC issue a Bill of Lading?

Yes, they issue various transport documents along with the House Bill of Lading.
