Driving toward our goal: Carbon neutral operations by 2040

With more than 200,000 motorized vehicles in our fleet, it’s our responsibility to work to reduce our carbon emissions. We've long been an advocate for alternative forms of energy. In fact, we introduced our first electric vehicle, powered by a lead-acid battery, in California in 1994. And in 2003 we were the first delivery company to use hybrid vehicles for pickup and delivery. 

Technology is advancing and manufacturing is scaling, which is helping us work toward an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery fleet by 2040—one of the steps on our journey to carbon neutral operations. Electric vehicles, e-cargo bikes, autonomous vehicles, and electric pallets can help us improve how we deliver. The transportation sector has a long way to go in integrating electric vehicles into our commercial fleets. But the market is now meeting the moment to enable us to better scale an electrification strategy for the FedEx global pickup and delivery fleet.

Setting out on the West Coast

As the first customer to receive BrightDrop Zevo 600, our first 150 vans have been deployed in Southern California. See the delivery of our first few Zevo 600s, which feature: 

  • Zero tailpipe emissions
  • 600+ cubic feet of cargo room
  • Up to 250 miles per full battery charge

Piloting in the FedEx Office Pickup and Delivery network

FedEx Office is collaborating with Ford Pro to pilot ten Ford E-Transit vans in our FedEx Office Pickup and Delivery fleet. The vehicles are being tested in nine markets in the US to assess performance in different road and weather conditions.  The Ford E-Transit has a targeted range of 126 miles on a single charge, making it an ideal vehicle for local courier delivery.

These vehicles are revolutionary in more ways than one. Their size makes them easy to navigate and park, which can help speed up deliveries. They can go up to 93 miles on a single charge, creating zero emissions and less noise than a gasoline-powered vehicle. Take a look and see why we're excited about our e-bike innovations.

Charging ahead: Building charging infrastructure across our network

An electric fleet is only useful when it’s able to be charged. As we work toward electrifying our pickup and delivery fleet, making sure we can have adequate charging infrastructure available at our facilities is a priority. That’s why our vehicles and facilities teams are working with power utilities, government officials at all levels, and regulatory agencies to plot a path forward. For example, we’ve invested in building 500+ charging stations across California. These stations alone have the potential to support more than 1,000 electric vehicles.

Our efforts don’t stop there. FedEx is actively collaborating with utility companies to develop more sustainable grids that will support the infrastructure needed for the large-scale adoption and charging of electric delivery vehicles. We're also working to forecast energy needed to support this EV infrastructure. We will work with utility companies to help ensure grid supply can meet the demand of EV charging infrastructure without negatively impacting market conditions in local communities. We understand the need for everyone to benefit from cleaner forms of energy; that's why we intend to explore working with energy suppliers to identify fair and equitable approaches to the transition to cleaner energy.

Getting charging infrastructure in place for a commercial fleet of electric trucks, vans, and other vehicles is complex. There are planning, policy, and infrastructure challenges to overcome. But we’re committed to doing the work, so we can go the distance—electrically.

Setting to work across the globe

We’re taking action to create an electric parcel pickup and delivery fleet. Exploration and pilots with different electric vehicles are happening in various countries. Electric vans are beginning to roll into operations in Southern California, and e-cargo bikes are moving into fleets in markets across the globe, particularly in Canada and Europe. 



Experiences of a FedEx Express e-cargo bike courier

FedEx Express has now added more than 70 e-cargo bikes to its operations in select European cities. A large number of these are in the UK - where plans are to add more than 200 e-cargo bikes to operations by 2025. But what are they like to ride? Did you know?

Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles make up less than 5% of vehicles on the road, but they create over 20% of carbon emissions from the transportation sector.1 That’s one reason vehicle electrification is so important.

Electric carts

We recently completed a four-month pilot test of electric carts in Manhattan’s Diamond District. During the test, FedEx Express couriers were able to increase package deliveries by 15% per hour when using the BrightDrop Trace (formerly EP1) on routes in a high-density, vertical urban environment. The test enabled us to eliminate one on-road vehicle from the delivery route and cut the dwell time of delivery vehicles at the curb in half. The Trace electric carts reduced physical strain on couriers and lowered the number of their trips back to their vehicles. After seeing such promising results, we’re expanding the test into 10 additional markets in 2022.

Same-day specialty deliveries

Nuro develops custom-built, all-electric, fully autonomous vehicles that operate on public roads. We’re working with them to test autonomous multi-stop and appointment-based deliveries. This collaboration could add more capacity to our environmentally friendly delivery solutions. Stay tuned for updates.
