Boarderie's recipe for shipping success: Quality, freshness, and FedEx

When the pandemic struck, businesses everywhere were faced with an unprecedented challenge: adapt or shut down. For Boarderie, a thriving catering company, a quick pivot was necessary to ensure their long-term success. Fellow Co-Founders and CEOs Aaron Mentinoff and Rachel Solomon share their journey from in-person events to nationwide e-commerce shipping with FedEx.

“We were a catering company for 15 years. We were doing hundreds of events in South Florida. We had an incredible client base, celebrities, royalty. It was a dream come true, and then the pandemic hit. Overnight, all the events canceled,” recalls Mentinoff.

Facing a crisis, Boarderie made a bold decision to pivot their business model to e-commerce. “We knew within our own catering company that cheese and charcuterie was on every single menu, and it was one of the fastest-growing culinary trends in the industry. So, we set out to create the first-ever shippable cheese and charcuterie board,” recalls Mentinoff.

Shipping perishable products across the country was no small feat, and Boarderie knew they needed a reliable partner to ensure their artisan creations would arrive in perfect condition. With expertise in shipping and logistics, FedEx became a key part of Boarderie's success story. By leveraging priority overnight shipping, Boarderie could assemble their handcrafted boards fresh each morning and get them to customers the very next day. “Our business model is set up all around quality and freshness. Any order that comes in by midnight, we're going to make that order fresh to arrive to our customer anywhere in the country the next day,” explains Solomon. “FedEx was able to offer us competitive rates that would allow us to be profitable with every single shipment.”

The partnership with FedEx not only provided Boarderie with a logistical solution but also gave them the confidence to focus on what they do best—curating exceptional customer experiences. Each Boarderie creation is designed to bring people together, sparking conversation and laughter as customers discover new flavors and pairings.

Boarderie grew incredibly fast.  They were selected in late 2022 on Shark Tank and closed a deal with Lori Greiner. Their boards were selected for “Oprah’s Favorite Things” list in 2022 and 2023.  Last year, Boarderie achieved the remarkable feat of setting a new GUINESS WORLD RECORDS® title for the Largest Charcuterie Board ever created. The breathtaking charcuterie board measured 20 feet by 14 feet, weighed 769 pounds and is inspired by a 169 times bigger replica of its best-selling Arte board.

They are also committed to doing their part in creating a sustainable global future. By reviewing their practices, establishing better waste management initiatives, and evaluating their overall supply chains, they were able to take measurable steps to creating a greener future with their packaging.  They ship using corrugated cardboard boxes made from 70% recycled materials which are 100% curbside recyclable. Their insulated liners are made from 100% recycled fiber material and are 100% curbside recyclable.

Boarderie’s growth has been nothing short of amazing. First year sales in 2021 were $1.7M and 10,000 boards were shipped. They are predicting to finish out 2024 with $60M in sales for and 400,000 boards delivered to the doorstep of delighted customers.  Their success story is a testament to the power of adaptability, creativity, and partnership.  By embracing e-commerce and collaborating with FedEx, Boarderie continues to grow and innovate, and they remain focused on their mission of spreading joy through artisanal food experiences.
