What is FedEx multiweight pricing?
Let’s say you have multiple packages to ship, and they’re all going from the same origin to the same destination. Would you get a better rate if you handled them all as a single shipment? Or kept them separate? With FedEx multiweight pricing, you’ll know the answer automatically.
Multiweight is rating logic that you add to your account. Once activated, it automatically compares the total cost of sending multiple shipments versus treating all the packages as a single shipment. Then it automatically applies the lower pricing. Did we mention it’s automatic?
Benefits of multiweight shipping? It’s basically effortless.
You’ll not only get the better rate. You’ll also do no extra work to get it.
No special configuration. Make sure multiweight pricing is activated on your account, and that’s all there is to it.
Nothing else to do. Once activated, the rating logic gets applied automatically to any qualifying shipment on your account. There’s nothing to remember; you don’t have to click anything.
No special packaging prep required. Just keep shipping like you always have. There’s no need for palletizing, shrink-wrapping, or any other special prep.
All tracking numbers provided. You’ll get a tracking number for each individual package. And if you create all the shipments at the same time, you’ll get a master tracking number for the combined shipment, too.

How to enable multiweight pricing
FedEx Express shipments
When you’re sending FedEx Express shipments that weigh more than 100 lbs., multiweight rates are applied automatically. There’s nothing you have to do.
FedEx Ground shipments
You can activate multiweight rates for FedEx Ground shipments by taking one of two steps. Either talk to your FedEx account executive to discuss your contract pricing agreement, or contact Customer Support.
Multiweight vs. freight shipping: Additional considerations
If the costs of multiweight and freight are equal, you might prefer multiweight for other reasons:
- When you can’t (or don’t want to) palletize. (This saves money on materials and time on shipment prep.)
- So you don’t have to set aside space to stage or segregate shipments.
- When you want to keep additional fees under control. (Many surcharges are capped and are significantly less than LTL accessorial fees.)
- So the weight of your pallet isn’t part of your shipment cost.
- So your destination doesn’t need to have a lift-gate or dock.
- When you’re delivering inside or in an urban area. (The package delivery vans used for multiweight deliveries are smaller and easier to maneuver than the tractor-trailers used for palletized shipments.)
Multiweight vs. individual packages: Additional considerations
Do you ship mostly lower-weight parcels? Then you’ll enjoy other benefits with FedEx multiweight shipping:
- Bill recipients or third parties for shipping.
- Contribute to your FedEx earned discount tiers, for savings on other products and services.
Automated pickup: When you don’t need it every day.
Do you ship regularly, but not every day? If so, consider FedEx Automated Pickup. This service alerts us when you’ve created your first shipment of the day. So we only come when you need us. And we waive your pickup fee for weeks with no pickups.
