Supporting International Forests of Need

According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), we are losing approximately 27 soccer fields worth of forest every minute, contributing to a steady rise in global temperature each year. As part of FedEx commitment to making our planet a better place for us and future generations, we’re helping to support and restore forests to mitigate some of this damage.

The FedEx Priority Earth initiative sets out to make meaningful contributions to the global conversation about a sustainable future. As part of this initiative, we are collaborating with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees in honor of FedEx customers in forests of need across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Through our joint reforestation projects, we’re helping to support critical forest ecosystems that promote biodiversity, sequester carbon, provide animal habitat and bring economic benefit to communities.

Why tree planting?

The world has warmed by 1.1 degrees Celsius since 1880 in part due to excess greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide. When executed properly, reforestation can help mitigate some of this rise in temperature thanks to the unique ability of trees to sequester carbon at-scale.

Properly managed forests can serve as a source of sustenance and income for local communities, providing food security and economic empowerment.

Deforestation threatens the habitat of countless global species, putting their ability to thrive at risk. Properly executed reforestation efforts can bolster critical ecosystems and help maintain sufficient biodiversity. High diversity also helps stabilize ecosystems against climate change.

Where are the forests of need?

With the support of their members, donors, and corporate supporters, the Arbor Day Foundation plants trees all over the world year-round. FedEx projects in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region will support forests across Indonesia and Australia in the spring of 2023, while projects in India and China will see planting take place in the summer and fall months of 2023.

Australia

This replanting project seeks to restore forests in Queensland, welcoming back many unique wildlife species, such as koalas and brush-tailed rock-wallabies

Indonesia

Reforestation will be carried out in the tropical rainforests of Biak Island, West Papua. This will promote food security by helping local subsistence farmers plant agroforestry trees.

China

Almost 40,000 new trees are to be planted near the city of Gaizhou, China. This will help mitigate soil depletion and erosion in the area and restore wildlife.

India

Reforestation will be carried out in southern India’s Cauvery River Basin, which will help improve tree cover and soil conditions over time.
