What to consider when sending a package to Canada?

Each country has different rules and regulations for importing. To ensure a successful delivery when you send a parcel to Canada, here are some general aspects to consider:

  • To begin with, make sure your items are not on restrictions and prohibited items the list of items prohibited by Canadian regulations.
  • Canada regulates the importation of many types of goods, including food, electronics, drugs and medical devices, which may require additional licensing and certification. If you’re shipping this type of merchandise, please consult the list of documents to be provided.
  • The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union has eliminated most import duties on goods originating in the European Union or Canada. A simple declaration of preferential origin on your commercial invoice (or any other commercial document) will suffice.
  • It is essential for Canadian customs authorities that the documentation contains an accurate description of the contents and value of your package, to ensure rapid clearance of your goods.

What documents do you need to send a package to Canada?

  • Commercial Invoice - This is not applicable if you send a parcel to Canada valued under 20 CAD. For a sample template and further instructions, read more.
  • Air Waybill - This is a contract of carriage between you and FedEx and contains important information about the shipment. We generate the air waybill number to include in your commercial invoice when you create a shipment.
