What are dangerous goods?
Dangerous goods are items or substances which, when transported, could pose a risk to health, safety, property or the environment. They need to be packed properly, handled carefully and shipped with the required expertise to ensure they arrive safely at their destination.
Caution: The shipper must verify the accuracy of information contained in section 14 by validating the classification with other elements contained within the SDS. Shippers should not rely solely on section 14 as being the correct DG classification for the purpose of shipping.
Which dangerous goods do we ship?
There are nine classes of dangerous goods and it’s important to know if the items you are shipping fall into one of them. Some goods, such as explosives and poisons, are clearly dangerous. But others may surprise you. Aerosols, perfumes and other products that contain specific lithium batteries – such as mobile phones or laptops – all count too.
Whether you ship by air or road, the classes for dangerous goods can be found below.
Explosives: substances capable of causing an explosion or releasing energy suddenly.
Compressed gases or liquefied gases: that can be flammable, toxic, or corrosive
Flammable liquids: liquids that can easily catch fire and sustain combustion.
Oxidizing substances: substances that can provide oxygen and promote combustion.
Flammable solids: solids that are easily ignited and can sustain combustion.
Toxic and infectious substances: substances that can cause injury or death when they get in contact with living organisms, either through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact.
Radioactive materials: materials that emit radiation and can pose risks to health and the environment.
Corrosive substances: substances that can cause damage to living tissues or materials through chemical reaction.
Miscellaneous: items and substances not classified to any other category such as dry ice and lithium batteries.
As well as these classifications, if you ship by air dangerous goods can be defined as either accessible or inaccessible.
These must be accessible to the flight crew in-flight.
Class 1: Explosives
(Like fireworks or flares)
Can be accepted only in certain markets and for certain sub-classes
Class 2: Gases
Class 2.1: Flammable gas
(Like aerosols or camping gas)
Class 2.2: Nonflammable gas /non-toxic gas with a “Cargo Aircraft Only” label
(Like a >75kg cylinder with compressed air)
Class 2.3: Toxic gas
(Like carbon monoxide)
Not accepted by FedEx
Class 3: Flammable liquids
(Like solvents or paints)
Class 4: Flammable solids or substances
Class 4.1: Flammable solids
(Like matches)
Class 4.2: Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
(Like phosphorus)
Class 4.3: Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gas
(Like calcium carbide)
Class 5: Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
Class 5.1: Oxidizers
(Like fertiliser)
Class 5.2: Organic Peroxides
(Like fibreglass repair kits)
Class 8: Corrosives
(Like bleach or drain cleaner)
These do not need to be loaded so they are accessible to the flight crew in-flight.
Class 2: Gases
Class 2.2.: Nonflammable gas/non-toxic gas without a “Cargo Aircraft Only” label
(Like a <75kg cylinder with compressed air)
Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances
Class 6.1: Toxic substances
(Like pesticides)
Class 6.2: Infectious substances
(Like blood tests or medical trials)
Can be accepted in certain markets, and under certain conditions
Class 7: Radioactive material
(Like smoke detectors)
Accepted in some markets only, with advance arrangements
Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods
(Like dry ice, air bags, telephones or laptops)
How to identify Dangerous Goods in FedEx?
When Dangerous Goods are identified and classified in FedEx network they fall under certain categories and must be identified by the appropriate handling code.

Acceptance of commodities may depend on the consignment size and weight, the (sub)class and country/territory.
Dangerous goods are not accepted by all FedEx locations and cannot be shipped with all our services.
