The future of FedEx: How we are laying the foundation for smarter, more sustainable supply chains

In today's competitive market, small businesses must continually seek new ways to stand out and succeed. Imagine finding a way to do both while also contributing to environmental stewardship. Discover how the global FedEx Corporation is expanding its reach with more sustainable operations to help protect and preserve the planet.

Today, FedEx Corporation (“FedEx”) has one of the most extensive transportation networks in the world, providing service to more than 220 countries and territories, and delivering millions of packages a day. The work we do globally helps businesses of all sizes connect with customers and contributes to the economy around the world. Yet, that is only one part of our story.

At a global level, FedEx recognizes that the transport of goods also impacts the environment and we have a responsibility to take action in addressing climate challenges. Moving toward our goal of carbon neutral operations by 20401, FedEx globally is working on enhancing sustainability in our own operations and innovating to make our packaging recyclable2 and provide estimated CO2e emissions data3.

See for yourself how we are progressing towards our carbon neutrality goal and laying the foundation for smarter, more sustainable supply chains.

How FedEx is working to deliver a more sustainable future

FedEx globally is making progress on our path to carbon neutral operations and seeing tangible results. Between FY09 and FY23, the global corporation achieved a 48% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions intensity4 on a revenue basis.

FedEx globally continues to advance towards our goal with several key milestones to be achieved in the coming years. These build on our global efforts to reduce aircraft and road vehicle emissions through fleet modernization and the use of cost-effective alternative fuels.

Building on our progress, FedEx globally is shifting our strategic approach to focus on actions needed to not only achieve carbon neutrality in our own operations, but also to support the transition of the transportation and logistics industry. For example, to drive widespread alternative fuel production, FedEx is collaborating with government agencies, academic institutions, and suppliers and trialing and using alternative fuels in our own operations.

Creating a more sustainable future, together

FedEx has developed an online tool that helps our customers make an informed shipping choice based on their shipments’ estimated CO2e emissions8.

FedEx Sustainability Insights (FSI)9 is a cloud-based tool that estimates emissions at a package and account level using, among other inputs, FedEx scan data across our network and facilities.

For eligible shipments, FSI allows customers to:

  • Evaluate and manage their carbon impact

  • Review their FedEx shipping history to better understand shipping patterns and environmental impact

  • Create reports to provide transparency to customers and stakeholders

Anyone can take advantage of FSI, all you need is a FedEx user ID and account number.
