Value-added services and surcharges
Our value-added services let you customise our FedEx services to your specific needs. Non-standard shipments or additional services provided may incur additional surcharges in addition to standard transportation costs.
Peak Surcharge will be called Demand Surcharge as of 4 September 2023.
Our value-added services and surcharges PDF remain the same for 2023 – including amounts of existing surcharges, except for the following updates:
Introduction of new Additional Handling Surcharges* (AHS) for non-standard packages. These types of shipments require additional resources to move effectively through our network. To account for these resources, an Additional Handling Surcharge applies.
Additional Handling Surcharge - Packaging
AHS-Packaging is triggered by non-standard shipments that are not compatible with our standard processes and can place our equipment, personnel, and other packages at risk. They require manual intervention to avoid packages getting entangled in conveyors, jamming chutes or slides, breaking sort equipment, or damaging other packages.
AHS-Packaging applies to a shipment containing any package that:
- is not fully encased in an outer shipping container or packaging;
- is encased in an outer shipping container or packaging not made of corrugated fibreboard (cardboard) materials, including but not limited to metal, wood, canvas, leather, hard plastic, soft plastic, or expanded polystyrene foam (e.g. Styrofoam);
- is encased in an outer shipping container or packaging covered in shrink wrap or stretch wrap;
- is round or cylindrical, including (without limitation) mailing tubes, cans, buckets, barrels, tires, drums, or pails;
- is bound with metal, plastic, or cloth banding, or has wheels (e.g. a bicycle), casters, handles, or straps, including packages where the outer surface area is loosely wrapped, or where the contents protrude outside the surface area;
- could become entangled in, or cause damage to other packages or the FedEx sortation system.
Additional Handling Surcharge - Weight
Applies to a shipment containing any package that has an actual weight greater than 31kg.
Our sortation systems are designed for packages up to 31kg. Packages over this weight require manual intervention to avoid crushing other packages or injuring employees.
Introduction of Additional Handling Surcharge for non-standard freight shipments.
Additional Handling Surcharge - Non-Stackable
Applies to any non-standard freight shipment containing at least one piece, skid or pallet that is non-stackable. Non-stackable means that a piece, skid or pallet cannot be stacked vertically in a safe and secure manner. Examples include, but are not limited to, non-stackable freight handling units that: 1) do not have a flat and stable top or base; 2) may be damaged if another piece is loaded on them; or 3) have flat and stable loading surfaces but are too narrow to safely and securely support other freight handling units (e.g. 1-2 barrels or drums). This surcharge applies once per shipment, even if multiple pieces identified as non-stackable are bundled in a shipment.
The billed surcharge does not represent a bookable service and does not contain any guarantee by FedEx to the extent that the respective shipments may not possibly be stacked at one point during transport.

To avoid these surcharges, you can read more about our packing tips and packaging guidelines at fedex.com.
* FedEx Express reserves the right to assess Additional Handling charges for packages that require special handling or that require FedEx to apply additional packaging during transit. If a non-standard shipment is eligible for two or all three Additional Handling Surcharges (Dimension, Weight, or Packaging), only the one with highest charge will apply. Package shape and dimensions may change during transit, which can affect the package’s surcharge eligibility. If the package shape and dimensions change during transit, FedEx may make appropriate adjustments to the shipment charges at any time.
Inclusion of Declared Value for Carriage and corresponding fee
Updates to postal codes and areas, primarily in the Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Shipments picked up or delivered to remote and less accessible locations are assessed an Out-of-Pickup-Area (OPA) or Out-of-Delivery-Area (ODA) surcharge.
From 16 January 2023, please refer to the list of postal codes or areas where this surcharge applies:
- Existing Global postal code list (applicable until 15 January 2023)
- New postal code list (applicable from 16 January 2023 )
