What to consider when sending a parcel to Nigeria:
Like importing into any country, shipping to Nigeria means you’ll have to fulfil local import rules and regulations. Here’s what to expect:
- FedEx can’t ship anything that’s been prohibited by the Nigerian government. So check our global shipping restrictions and prohibited items list if you aren’t sure.
- Nigeria regulates and restricts the import of various consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, animal products, used goods and other goods. Importing these can require special licensing and regulatory product certificates. Check your goods’ Harmonised System (HS) code with our International Shipping Assist tool to see if anything applies to your shipment.
- The documentation requirements for shipping to Nigeria from the UK are slightly more extensive than some other countries. However, Nigeria’s Single Window Portal system means you only must deal with a single regulatory entity online to apply for certification and permits on any goods. The Single Window Portal allows traders to access customs regulations online, submit customs documents electronically, track transaction status online, and submit electronic payments.
- Get all your documentation submitted before your shipment arrives at customs and save time. FedEx® Electronic Trade Documents can help you send your commercial invoices electronically, and other documents too. You should also provide a full and accurate shipment description and value even if it isn’t for commercial purposes. Read more tips on avoiding delays at customs.
Documents you need for shipping to Nigeria
- Commercial Invoice - This is one of the most essential import documents. Whether you’re shipping from the UK to Nigeria or any other country, this is the main point of reference customs will use. Check out our guide, which includes a helpful template, to ensure it’s completed correctly.
- Air Waybill - Proof of a contract of carriage between a sender and FedEx. An Air Waybill number is needed for many import documents and is provided when you create a new shipment.
