UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
Did you know that you could save money on your international shipments to and from Japan?
The UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) came into force on 1 January 2021, enabling the vast majority of goods of UK or Japan origin to continue to be traded tariff-free. All it takes is a simple declaration to be added to the commercial invoice.
The UK-Japan CEPA replaces and goes beyond the EU-Japan trade agreement arrangements, which no longer apply to the UK now that it has left the EU.
Learn how you could benefit from the UK-Japan CEPA.
What’s in it for my business?
Cost savings
Tariff-free access is maintained and non-tariff barriers kept to a minimum.
Improved access
Renewed access to the Japanese market could mean new opportunities for your business.
Simpler regulation
UK and Japanese companies can continue to work together, for example, by taking advantage of more closely aligned standards and regulations.
Simplified, modern customs procedures
Modern customs processes allow for quick and easy release of your goods.
NOTE: The trade agreement applies to duties, not taxes. Any applicable Consumption Tax for imports into Japan and VAT for imports into the UK still need to be paid.
How can I benefit?
To benefit from reduced or 0% tariffs, products must be of ‘United Kingdom origin’. All it takes is a declaration. No formal certificate is required. Simply add the following to your commercial invoice (or any other commercial document) along with a detailed description of the goods as you would usually do:
Sample Statement of Origin:
(Period: from___________ to __________)
The exporter of the products covered by this document (Exporter Reference No. ______) declares that, except where otherwise clearly indicated, these products are of United Kingdom preferential origin.
__________________________________
(Origin criteria used)
___________________________________
(Place and date)
_________________________________
(Printed name of the exporter)
For UK exporters, the Exporter Reference No. is your EORI number, which needs to be provided within the declaration regardless of the commercial value of goods.
There is a small consignment waiver for goods entering Japan from the UK valued under 200,000 Japanese Yen (JPY). Goods valued under this threshold do not require a statement of origin.
Origin criteria used must be indicated in the space provided and should be established based on the criteria set out in Chapter 3 of the Agreement.
Important note: It is essential that the declaration is filled out correctly or it may be rejected by customs. Please consult the official text of the origin declaration.
