What is Transshipment?
Transshipment meaning
Transshipment is the process when goods are moved between vehicles such as airplanes, trains, lorries, and ships before reaching their destination. It happens at specialized hubs when there is no direct route between export and import locations.
It includes unloading goods, transferring goods to another vehicle at the transshipment hub, and transporting goods to the destination.
Specialized Transshipment Hubs including (in terms of container volume and traffic)
- Shanghai
- Singapore
- Ningbo-Zhoushan, China
- Busan, South Korea
- Hong Kong
What’s the difference between Transshipments vs direct shipments?
- Deployment: Transshipment involves two vehicles transferring containers at a transshipment hub, while direct shipments move containers directly from one place to another using a single vehicle.
- Port count: Transshipment involves three places - origin, transshipment port, and destination, while direct shipment only requires two - origin and destination.
- Cost: Transshipment usually has lower transportation costs.
- Duration: Transshipment is significantly longer than direct shipment.
