What is Partners in Protection (PIP)?

PIP is a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) program that enlists the cooperation of private industry to enhance border and trade chain security, combat organized crime and terrorism and help detect and prevent contraband smuggling.

On June 30, 2008, a strengthened PIP program was introduced. It implements minimum security requirements; mandatory site validations; denial, suspension, cancellation, reinstatement and appeal policies and procedures; and an automated application process.
These steps to strengthen the PIP program also ensure that it is better aligned with international standards such as the Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade (SAFE) and the Authorized Economic Operator concept of the World Customs Organization. FedEx Canada is an approved member of the new strengthened PIP program.

What is Free and Secure Trade (FAST)?

FAST is a joint program of the U.S. and Canada governments to tighten border security while keeping the border open to the free flow of known, low-risk legitimate trade. Importers and carriers must be approved in the CSA program and must have signed a PIP memorandum of understanding to be eligible for the FAST program into Canada. To be eligible for FAST into the U.S, importers and carriers must be C-TPAT certified.

FedEx Canada as an approved carrier under the FAST program can offer qualified customers an expedited clearance process.

What is C-TPAT?

C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism) is a joint government-business initiative to build cooperative relationships that strengthen overall supply chain and border security.

When FAST and C-TPAT certified customers, certified carriers and registered drivers work together, the program provides expedited clearance and less customs intrusion for air, as well as dedicated reporting lanes at the border.

Is FedEx FAST and C-TPAT certified?
Yes, with its certification under the FAST and C-TPAT programs, FedEx Canada is one of a small number of carriers that can offer qualified customers an expedited clearance process. The status verification interface number (SVI) is as follows:

FedEx Express SVI# fedAir00407

FedEx Global Trade Advisory Services support and provide advice to businesses seeking certification or approval in these cross-border security programs.

What is CSA?

Introducing pre-authorized, expedited clearance of goods under the Customs Self Assessment (CSA) program with FedEx Express. If you frequently ship goods into Canada, the CSA program may work for you as it enables clearance of goods across the border for low-risk, pre-authorized importers and carriers.

FedEx Express was the first integrated carrier in Canada to receive Customs Self Assessment certification.

If your company is CSA-certified, you can use FedEx Express to:

  • Expedite clearance of goods across the Canada/U.S. border
  • Significantly reduce paperwork and eliminate the need for pre-approval and customs documents
  • Use your own tracking and accounting system to remit customs duties

To learn how you can become CSA-certified, visit the Canada Border Service Agency's Customs Self Assessment Program website.
