PIP is a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) program that enlists the cooperation of private industry to enhance border and trade chain security, combat organized crime and terrorism and help detect and prevent contraband smuggling.

On June 30, 2008, a strengthened PIP program was introduced. It implements minimum security requirements; mandatory site validations; denial, suspension, cancellation, reinstatement and appeal policies and procedures; and an automated application process.
These steps to strengthen the PIP program also ensure that it is better aligned with international standards such as the Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade (SAFE) and the Authorized Economic Operator concept of the World Customs Organization. FedEx Canada is an approved member of the new strengthened PIP program.

FAST is a joint program of the U.S. and Canada governments to tighten border security while keeping the border open to the free flow of known, low-risk legitimate trade. Importers and carriers must be approved in the CSA program and must have signed a PIP memorandum of understanding to be eligible for the FAST program into Canada. To be eligible for FAST into the U.S, importers and carriers must be C-TPAT certified.

C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism) is a joint government-business initiative to build cooperative relationships that strengthen overall supply chain and border security.

When FAST and C-TPAT certified customers, certified carriers and registered drivers work together, the program provides expedited clearance and less customs intrusion for air, as well as dedicated reporting lanes at the border.
