Customs Information
FedEx provides the following important information concerning imports and exports.
To import certain items into the U.S., you must have either an IRS Employer Identification Number (EIN) or (for individuals) a Social Security Number (SSN) on file with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This information must be included on the international air waybill and Commercial Invoice. Any changes to a company name, address or to the EIN or SSN should be provided to FedEx for system updating. Shipments that arrive in the U.S. without the correct EIN or SSN may be detained until that information can be obtained.
This requirement applies to U.S. import shipments with a declared value for customs in excess of US$2,0001 and for the following commodities regardless of value: textiles or textile products; leather or leather products; other goods that are restricted or controlled, requiring a formal entry by the CBP; and shipments processed electronically through the Automated Broker Interface/Automated Commercial System (ABI/ACS).
1 This limit is subject to change. Call 1.800.247.4747 for current information.
All nondocument shipments to Anguilla, Antigua, Martinique, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis must be cleared through customs by the recipient. All nondocument shipments to St. Vincent and Grenada valued over $50; to Argentina valued over $3,000 or greater than 50 kgs.; to Chile valued over $500; and to Brazil valued over $500, must be cleared through customs by the recipient. In these cases, customs paperwork will be delivered to the recipient, and delivery of paperwork constitutes shipment delivery.
