( BW)(FEDERAL-EXPRESS)(FDX) Federal Express Corp. and the Fedex Pilots Association Announce Agreement

    Business Editors

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 1997--Federal Express Corp. (FedEx) and the Fedex Pilots Association (FPA), the collective bargaining representative for the FedEx pilots, jointly announced today that they have reached a conceptual agreement on a four year collective bargaining agreement. FPA's board of directors has unanimously voted to approve a contract proposal negotiated between the FedEx pilots and the company. FPA will present the proposed agreement to the membership for ratification in early January and the ratification process will conclude 30 days thereafter. If ratified by the membership, the contract will be the first collectively bargained agreement between the pilots' union and FedEx.
"The FPA Board has unanimously approved the contract proposal, which is the culmination of formal negotiations begun in June, and we recommend it to our pilots without reservation," said FPA President and MD-11 Captain Mike Akin.
Details of the contract will be included in the materials being prepared for distribution to the pilots as part of the ratification process.
"We are extremely pleased to have reached this important milestone in our pilot negotiations and look forward to a successful completion of the process," said Theodore L. Weise, executive vice president, worldwide operations, FedEx.
FPA won the right to represent FedEx pilots and was certified on Oct. 29, 1996. The contract negotiations between FPA and FedEx used the interest-based bargaining philosophy - a negotiation concept that recognizes the needs and concerns of both the pilots and the company.
