( BW)(FEDERAL-EXPRESS)(FDX) FedEx expands in Anchorage to keep pace
with Asia boom
Business Editors
ANCHORAGE, Alaska--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1997--Federal
Express Corp. (NYSE: FDX) ("FedEx") broke ground today on a $38
million hub expansion that will improve its international flow of
goods, especially between the United States and growing markets in
Asia.
"Anchorage is FedEx's gateway to Asia -- the fastest growing
economic region in the world -- and a key international clearance
hub in FedEx's global network," said Denny Bird, managing director
of national sort operations in Anchorage. "Our Anchorage clearance
and sort operation is beginning to reach its peak capacity as
volumes continue to rise.
"The trend in logistics is toward FedEx's time-certain
transportation system that reduces companies' inventories and
directly links them to their customers," Bird said. "This is
especially true of the exporting, manufacturing economies in Asia
and the Pacific where FedEx has established an unparalleled network
for express shipments."
Since 1990, the Anchorage Hub's first full year of operation,
average daily volume for FedEx International Priority(R) has grown
by more than 300 percent. FedEx International Priority is a
time-definite, customs-cleared, door-to-door service to more than
200 countries.
The Anchorage expansion will increase sorting capacities and
provide for growth, allowing FedEx to serve more customers with
increased efficiency. It also will expand our ability to speed the
processing of items that have pre-cleared customs through advanced
electronic technology. About 90 percent of FedEx International
Priority items now are pre-cleared.
"We will be able to handle more packages and to do it better,
faster and more reliably than ever before," Bird said.
Federal Express is the world's largest express transportation
company providing fast and reliable services for more than 2.8
million items to 211 countries each working day. The company has
more than 41,000 drop-off locations, employs approximately 127,000
people who operate an integrated global network of more than 575
aircraft, 38,000 vehicles and over 550,000 FedEx Powership(R) and
FedEx Ship(R) automated shipping systems. Federal Express reported
revenues of $10.3 billion for its fiscal year ended May 31, 1996.
