( BW)(FEDERAL-EXPRESS)(FDX) Federal Express Revises Pricing; FedEx
Technology Keeps New Rate Structure Simple for Customers
Business Editors
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 1997--Federal Express
Corp. (NYSE: FDX) will revise its domestic pricing structure this
summer in order to make its leading express transportation services
even more attractive to customers. The new rates will be more
closely aligned with FedEx's transportation costs and will be
determined by the destination, weight and type of domestic service
customers choose.
"With this change, FedEx prices will more closely reflect the
cost of providing the FedEx services our customers want, and will
offer substantial savings to customers shipping shorter distances,"
said Mike Glenn, sr. vice president, marketing and customer service.
"Our leading-edge technology -- FedExShip, FedEx PowerShip and the
FedEx Web site -- and our commitment to customer service will keep
transactions fast and simple for our customers."
The new FedEx prices will be based on the weight and size of the
shipment, the distance between the shipper and the recipient, and the
service commitment. FedEx has offered such region-based pricing on
all international shipments and to certain domestic customers for
many years. The company is beginning the process of notifying
customers of the change, which goes into effect July 1.
"I've been really pleased with FedEx's distance-based pricing
compared to the competition. It's a better deal for my business,"
said Tom Pickard, manager of Barfield-AVSCO, Inc., a shipper of
aircraft parts in Kansas City, Mo. "FedEx service levels are higher,
the tracking ability is tremendous, and FedEx automation helps me
calculate my rates easily."
"Distance-based pricing, combined with the technology and speed
of delivery FedEx provides, is a more cost-effective shipping
alternative to anything that currently exists for our business,"
said Mitch Bentz, director of transportation logistics for Merisel
Inc., a distributor of microcomputer products in El Segundo, Calif.
"Using FedEx integrated automation to calculate our rates, process
our shipping labels and receive tracking data gives Merisel a
competitive edge."
The new rates apply to packages which are dropped off to FedEx or
picked up at a regular FedEx stop. There will be a $3.00 charge to
customers for on-call pick-ups.
The change is the latest in a series of FedEx initiatives to
improve the value of its global services. Most recently, FedEx
lowered rates last October by an average of 23% on its FedEx 2Day
service for shipments up to 5 lbs. Other such recent initiatives
include:
-- FedEx International First(TM), the company's overnight service
from the U.S. to more than a dozen major commercial centers
in Europe for 10:30 a.m.;
-- Service from Moscow offering next day FedEx delivery to much
of North America by 10:30 a.m. with the industry's only
money-back guarantee;
-- The only direct service to China provided by a U.S.-based,
all-cargo carrier. FedEx now serves more than 60 cities in
China through route authorities connecting the U.S. to
Beijing and Shanghai and the FedEx AsiaOne(R) hub in Subic
Bay, The Philippines;
-- Enhancements to FedEx interNetShip(TM), including online
account registration, online search for the nearest FedEx
drop-off location, and advance e-mail notification of
shipments.
Federal Express is the world's largest express transportation
company providing fast and reliable services for more than 2.7
million items to 211 countries each working day. The company has
more than 40,000 drop-off locations, employs approximately 127,000
people who operate an integrated global network of more than 560
aircraft, 38,000 vehicles and over 500,000 Powership(R) and FedEx
Ship(TM) automated shipping systems. Federal Express reported
revenues of $10.3 billion for its fiscal year ended May 31, 1996.
