FedEx Express Honors Employees' Acts of Courage
and Exemplary Dedication to Customer Service
Business Editors
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 2003--
Total of 165 Employees Receive Coveted Humanitarian or Purple Promise
Award at Special Ceremony
Demonstrating quick thinking and dedicated service to others,
FedEx Express employees saved lives, brought criminals to justice, and
conquered unforeseen customer service challenges during the past year.
At a special ceremony on October 23, 2003, FedEx Express, a subsidiary
of FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX), honored an elite group of employees whose
unselfish and heroic acts were recognized with the presentation of one
of two prestigious awards, the Humanitarian or Purple Promise Award.
"FedEx values its People first and believes that they are the
heart and soul of the company. For more than 20 years, individual
employees have made the decision to reach out and help those in need
or in danger and to go the extra mile for their customers," said David
J. Bronczek, president and CEO of FedEx Express. "It is most
appropriate that FedEx recognizes them for their contributions to the
greater community and to the company's continuing success."
Seventy-five employees received the Humanitarian Award, which
recognizes employees whose special acts, particularly in
life-threatening situations, promote human welfare and community
responsibility. Ninety employees received Purple Promise Awards, which
commend employees who demonstrate exceptional on-the-job performance
or conduct unselfish acts that enhance FedEx customer service. This
year's recipients include representatives from 37 different states and
4 countries.
The following describes some of this year's Humanitarian Award
stories. The award is given to those who reach out to others in need:
Kenneth Giles, Ramp Transport Driver, Ontario, Calif.
Giles witnessed a police helicopter crash, called 911 and rushed
to the aid of the two men on board. He and another passerby dragged
the men out of the burning helicopter before it burst into flames.
Giles has been recognized for his actions by many local organizations
including the Ontario, Calif. Police Dept.; Ontario, Calif. City
Council; Claremont, Calif. Police Council and the California Sheriffs
Association.
Michael Hughes, Courier, Amarillo, Texas
On his route, Hughes saw a vehicle drive over an ice patch, roll
three times and land in a field 70 yards away from the road. He
immediately went to the victims' aid and pulled a two-year-old girl
and her mother from the wreckage. Because the area was remote, Hughes
transported both the mother and child to a local hospital 25 minutes
away. Afterward, he made several inquiries into their conditions and
sent the little girl a toy bear.
Tracy Ries, Courier, Sioux Falls, S. D.
On her morning route on a cold December day, Ries twice noticed a
van parked on the side of a rural road with its engine running. When
she stopped the second time, she found an 18-month-old child in a car
seat, but could not find a driver. Because the vehicle was filled with
exhaust fumes and the temperature was below freezing, Ries took the
child to a safe location leaving a note on the van to explain her
actions. The police were able to locate the van owner who had
experienced a seizure and walked away from his vehicle not remembering
where he left his vehicle with his child in it.
Below are several stories summarizing the actions of several of
the Purple Promise Award recipients. The award goes to employees who
truly go "above and beyond" for their customers.
Vincent Bruno, Ramp Agent, and John Crawford, Senior Operations
Support Specialist, Fort Myers, Fla.
After learning on a Friday that the only bridge connecting Sanibel
Island to mainland Florida would be closed for emergency repairs on
Monday and that the couriers would not be able to make their
deliveries that day, Bruno and Crawford volunteered their time off and
personal equipment to ensure that customers received their packages on
time. Bruno, who was on vacation, volunteered his time and boat to
transport couriers and packages back and forth from the island.
Crawford and his family organized the logistics, using Crawford's
personal equipment to transport the packages via boat to prearranged
delivery vans, ensuring that more than 200 packages shipments reached
their destination on time.
Bernard Lyons, Courier, Mount Vernon, N.Y.
Late on a Saturday afternoon, after normal pick up operations had
ended, Lyons received a call regarding an urgent package at a medical
center that had to be picked up and sent out that night. The package
contained bone marrow, which had to be in New Mexico within three days
or the marrow would be useless. Lyons picked up the package from the
medical center and drove it to the airport with a Newark Police
escort. The package made the last FedEx flight out that night and the
marrow was successfully delivered to its destination, well before its
efficacy could expire.
