( BW)(TN-FEDEX)(FDX) FedEx Express Honors Humanitarian Award
Recipients; Nearly 70 Employees to Receive Commendation for
Outstanding Community Efforts
Business Editors
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2002--Sixty-eight FedEx
Express employees will receive the company's Humanitarian Award, which
rewards employees whose special acts, particularly in life-threatening
situations, promote human welfare and community responsibility. Of
this group, 18 recipients will be recognized for their efforts
surrounding September 11.
"These honorees exemplify the best attributes of the human
spirit," said David J. Bronczek, president and CEO of FedEx Express.
"Their unselfish actions are an inspiration to all of us. FedEx is
enormously proud to have them as employees."
From assisting with life-saving rescues to stopping crimes in
progress, these FedEx Express employees have redefined the phrase
"above and beyond the call of duty" over the past year. Tonight they
will be honored with the company's Humanitarian Award. FedEx Express
will celebrate these recipients' unmatched concern for members of
their communities and their commitment to exceed the expectations of
their jobs - at a company where exemplary customer service is a top
priority.
Following are several examples of 2002 Humanitarian Award
recipients:
Edward F. Heussler, Courier, Mechanicsville, VA.
Recognized by his community for his gallant and dedicated service
to others in need, Heussler risked his life in an attempt to save a
stranger. While driving on his route, Heussler noticed smoke and
flames coming from a house. Without hesitation, he rushed inside the
house to aid a woman trapped inside. During the rescue attempt,
Heussler's clothes caught fire, and he was forced from the burning
home. His selfless actions resulted in life-threatening second- and
third-degree burns to more than 45 percent of his body.
Teodoro Alvarez and Thomas B. Simpson, Senior Aviation Maintenance
Technicians, Memphis, Tenn.
A colleague of Alvarez and Simpson became unconscious while at
work. Before emergency personnel arrived, the two began
cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Alvarez performed mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation, while Simpson began cardiac massage and administered
oxygen to help restore the colleague's breathing and heart rate. Their
quick actions saved the colleague's life.
Pamela A. Andrews, Handler, Anchorage, AK
While on her route, Andrews noticed that three wild moose had
surrounded a group of children walking home from school. The moose
were blocking the children's walking trail. Andrews acted quickly by
placing her truck between the moose and the children. She then left
her truck to walk the children to safety.
Idalia Wyatt, Courier, Grand Prairie, TX
After delivering a package to an apartment complex, Wyatt
encountered a lost child standing outside, crying and wearing only
pajamas in the 19-degree weather. After several attempts to locate the
child's parents, Wyatt contacted someone at the apartment office for
assistance. Together they were able to return the boy to his father,
who was unaware that his son had wandered away.
In addition to recognizing Humanitarian Award recipients, FedEx
will acknowledge 31 employees with Golden Falcon Awards. This award
honors employees who demonstrate exceptional on-the-job performance or
conduct unselfish acts that enhance FedEx customer service. This
year's Humanitarian and Golden Falcon Award recipients include
representatives from 30 different states.
Bronczek and other FedEx senior executives will present the 99
recipients with their awards this evening in Memphis at the company's
annual Humanitarian and Golden Falcon Awards banquet at the Peabody
Hotel.
