( BW)(TN-FEDEX)(FDX) FedEx Contribution Helps the National Civil
Rights Museum Explore a Legacy
Business Editors
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2002--The National
Civil Rights Museum announced today that FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX) has
committed to contributing a $500,000 gift to the museum's capital
campaign in support of its "Exploring the Legacy" expansion project in
Memphis.
The $500,000 gift is an extension of FedEx's ongoing support of
the museum and will be a multi-year payment of $100,000 for five
years. This additional contribution brings FedEx's total support of
the museum over the past five years to more than $1 million.
"We are very grateful to FedEx for this generous contribution and
its long standing commitment to the museum over the years," said
Beverly Robertson, the museum's executive director. "This particular
expansion is an important one that will allow us to tell more about
Dr. King's work and the overall American Civil Rights Movement."
"Since the early 1990s, FedEx has supported the National Civil
Rights Museum's mission to educate the public about the Civil Rights
Movement, and its influence on human rights movements worldwide," said
David J. Bronczek, president and CEO, FedEx Express. "We at FedEx
strongly believe there is a time and place for diversity - all the
time and every place. The company is honored to make this contribution
and continue our ongoing commitment to the museum, and to the greater
Memphis community."
The museum's $11 million expansion, funded primarily by donors'
support, will create 12,800 square feet of exhibit space, connecting
the main campus of the museum with additional space located across the
street. The expansion will also include an outdoor promenade and a
refurbished gift shop. Lastly, the original museum, which opened in
1991, also will receive a face-lift as part of the project, with
updated video and audio clips to enhance existing displays.
FedEx will be given naming rights to one of the museum's Legacy
Rooms, which depict historical milestones, achievements, and movements
that were a direct result of Martin Luther King's and other pivotal
leaders' involvement with the American Civil Rights Movement.
"Exploring the Legacy" opens on September 28, 2002, with a
dedication ceremony at the museum at 9:30 a.m. Former Freedom Award
recipients and local civic leaders, as well as museum donors and
members, are expected to attend.
