( BW)(TN-FEDEX)(FDX) FedEx Canada Launches World Class Hub Facility
With Art-of-Movement Celebration; New Canadian Hub Facility Creates A
Vital Trade Link Between Canadian Businesses And Global Markets
Business Editors
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 2002--Federal
Express Canada Ltd. (a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX))
today officially opened its new state-of-the-art Canadian hub facility
in a gala "art-of-movement" ceremony that included 300 industry and
government leaders. Former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney
provided a keynote address that emphasized the importance of the trade
relationship between Canada and the U.S.
"The launch of our new Canadian hub facility represents a major
milestone for our Canadian operations," said Don Colleran, president
of Federal Express Canada Ltd. "More than bricks and mortar, this
leading edge hub is a vital trade conduit - unparalleled in scope -
linking Canadian businesses to global markets. In particular, our new
facility supports our longstanding trade relationship with the United
States and provides an effective link between corporate Canada and
important markets in the U.S."
Among distinguished guests in attendance, David J. Bronczek, FedEx
Express, president and chief executive officer, joined Canadian
executives to celebrate the opening of the new hub. "This leading edge
facility is yet another example of our commitment to Canadian
customers and employees," said Bronczek. "Through the innovative
technologies this facility incorporates, we are fully prepared to meet
future demands of a growing economy driven by robust international
trade."
The launch celebration was themed "art-of-movement" to represent
the art of movement FedEx has achieved in the provision of
transportation and supply chain services worldwide. An art-of-movement
is achieved at the new Canadian hub everyday through a combined force
of dedicated people, advanced technology and innovative design.
CANADIAN FIRSTS:
The new Canadian hub facility is responsible for several FedEx
firsts in Canada, particularly in the area of technology. The hub is
the first facility in Canada to use Symbol ring scanners - a
hands-free scanning device that allows employees to handle packages
more easily. Wireless technology is also used throughout the building.
It is the first FedEx facility worldwide to implement INTERCEPT in
full production - INTERCEPT is a FedEx-developed technology that
better manages international clearance and warehousing information, by
increasing control and visibility.
The efficiency of the new facility is in the design of its sort
operation, which is divided by function onto three floors and moves
freight through the system more quickly than at the previous facility.
A larger, more efficient facility not only improves sort capacity, but
also improves delivery time by up to 45 minutes to some stations.
The hub's Computer Control Centre is capable of handling complex
routing, assuring flexibility and a smoother workflow. The built-in
flexibility of the system allows the Control Centre to create detours
around various problem areas to ensure reliability and continuous
performance.
In terms of scale, the new hub is more than three times the size
of the previous facility. At 342,000 square feet (31,772 square
meters), the hub can house three football fields or 11 ice surfaces.
The interconnected conveyor system stretches across 12,141 feet (over
3,700 meters) and up 3 stories. Over 450 people work at the facility,
moving up to 12,000 packages per hour (maximum capacity) through the
system each day. The World Service Centre has a 10-agent counter and
is the largest in Canada.
The new Canadian hub is located in Mississauga, next to Pearson
International Airport at 6895 Bramalea Road.
