( BW)(PA-FEDEX-GROUND)(FDX) FedEx Ground Receives Wireless Industry Award for New System That Captures Digital Signatures At Package Delivery

    Business Editors

    PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2001--

Recipient Signatures Available Online by Midnight of the Same Day

FedEx Ground, the second largest small-package ground carrier in North America and an operating unit of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), received a "Moby" award at the information technology industry's premier wireless conference, Go Mobile, sponsored by Mobile Insights and held recently in Phoenix.
The award recognizes FedEx Ground's recent enhancement of its pickup and delivery data collection and transmission system to enable the capture of an electronic signature at package delivery. The technology upgrade provides FedEx Ground customers with the fastest signature proof of delivery (P.O.D.) and adds to the most detailed package tracking information in the ground shipping market.
"We are constantly striving to provide our customers with more information about their shipments faster," said Daniel J. Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Ground. "It is especially gratifying to know that the leaders in the wireless industry have taken notice of our new systems and are as impressed with them as our customers."
This no-charge, same-day signature proof-of-delivery is made possible by electronically collecting recipient signatures at the point of delivery via a portable scanner equipped with a 1/8-inch VGA display and digitizer overlay. Through the use of on-van computers and a wide area network, critical data - such as delivery time and recipient name - is posted to FedEx's award-winning Web site, fedex.com, within an hour of delivery. The actual signature file is later transmitted via a company-owned local area network and posted to fedex.com by midnight local time.
This project is the latest in a long line of technological innovations FedEx Ground has introduced to the small-package ground shipping market, including the use of bar code labels that allow package tracking and automated sorting. Other recent technology enhancements have reduced transit times, automated the pickup process, increased the number of times a package is scanned while moving through the network and provided more detailed and easier-to-understand tracking results at fedex.com.
