PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 2001--FedEx Ground, the
second-largest small-package ground carrier in North America and an
operating company of FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX), will participate in
a ground-breaking ceremony today for its new distribution and delivery
facility in Overland, Mo.
Scheduled to open in early 2003, the new Overland facility will
provide pickup and delivery services to the St. Louis metropolitan
area. The company will consolidate its existing facilities in St.
Louis and St. Charles, which amount to a combined 92,500 square feet,
and relocate them to the new 162,000 square-foot building in Overland.
"The Overland location will provide FedEx Ground with improved
access to its service area, major highways and a large labor pool,"
said Rock Sherman, a managing director for FedEx Ground. "A
contributing factor to selecting this location was the outstanding
cooperation we received from the City of Overland."
FedEx Ground will lease its new facility from Woodson Road, L.L.C,
owner of the 23-acre site on which the building will be constructed.
The developer, Scannell Properties, is partnering with the
architectural firm, Tower Design Group P.C. and contractor United
Construction to design and build the facility, which will house the
company's automated material handling equipment. Commercial brokers,
The Sansone Group and Fischer & Company were involved in the deal.
United Construction owner, Barry Koenemann says, "United
Construction is very pleased to be part of this project, our fourth
for affiliates of the FedEx Corporation."
FedEx Ground first began operations in the St. Louis area in 1985.
In 1991, it expanded its local presence with the opening of its St.
Charles facility. Combined, these facilities currently have a
workforce of approximately 200 employees and independent contractors,
which will increase once the new facility is operational.
The new facility is part of a three-year, $500-million expansion
investment that will increase the capacity of FedEx Ground's network
by 50 percent. Announced in January 1999, the plan includes the
opening or expansion of more than 50 facilities, including the new
Overland facility.
