( BW)(TN-FEDEX-FREIGHT)(FDX) FedEx Freight Companies Honored With Quest for Quality Awards; American Freightways, Viking Freight Also Recognized by Customers for Superior Performance

    Business Editors

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2001--In recognition of their dedication to exceptional service, reliability and on-time performance, FedEx Freight operating companies American Freightways (AF) and Viking Freight have been chosen by the readers of Logistics Management & Distribution Report as Medal of Excellence winners in the publication's 18th annual Quest for Quality survey.
Nearly 3,000 buyers of transportation services across the nation rated carriers on five quality criteria in the Quest for Quality survey: on-time performance, value, customer service, information technology and equipment and operations.
AF was the only multiregional less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier that scored high enough in its category to win a Quest for Quality award this year, marking the sixteenth consecutive year that the company has achieved the honor. Viking Freight earned its tenth award in the Western Regional LTL Carrier category.
"We feel especially proud that shippers singled out AF as the only multiregional LTL carrier that exceeds their expectations," said Tom Garrison, president and CEO of American Freightways. "Service excellence is a major focus of everything we do, and this award is proof that we're accomplishing our mission of continuously striving for the highest levels of performance."
"Viking surpassed its 2000 scores for all five Quest for Quality criteria, which I attribute to our collective dedication to constantly raising the bar on service," said Tilton Gore, president and CEO of Viking Freight. "This honor recognizes the efforts of all Vikings to be Easy To Do Business With."
Both AF and Viking also recently earned additional accolades from their respective customers. Long-time customer Pacific Bell Directory (PBD) bestowed its Supplier Quality Alliance (SQA) Program's Gold Level Award on Viking based on criteria including organizational leadership, strategic planning, information and analysis, process management, and customer satisfaction and accomplishments. Viking is the only transportation provider to ever win PBD's Gold Award and has now achieved that honor two years in a row. The carrier attained 100% rating and billing accuracy for the third consecutive year and posted its third year-over-year improvement in delivery timeliness.
For the third consecutive year, Michelin North America recognized American Freightways with its LTL Interregional Quality Carrier of the Year Award for achieving top performance in the areas of on-time service, error-free deliveries, customer satisfaction, and accuracy in billing and EDI transmissions. The recognition is part of Michelin's Partners in Transportation nationwide program.
