WHAT: Two giant pandas from Chengdu, China for the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. will arrive aboard a specially painted FedEx MD-11 jet on Wednesday, December 6, at Washington Dulles International Airport. -- 2:30 p.m. - Media briefing about 17-hour flight/transportation -- 3:00 p.m. - Photo opportunity of "PandaONE" arrival and offloading of pandas -- Upon Arrival - Question and answers with FedEx pilots and Zoo veterinarians traveling aboard FedEx PandaONE Due to Airport Regulations and in order to access the airport tarmac, all media must register by Tuesday, December 5, and show press credentials upon arrival at the FedEx facility. This is a media-only event and is not open to the public.
WHEN: Wednesday, December 6, 2000 2:00 p.m. (EST) Media set-up beginning at 1:45 p.m.

BACKGROUND:
Tian Tian and Mei Xiang will arrive on a custom-painted FedEx MD-11 jet, "FedEx PandaOne." Veterinarians from the National Zoo and China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda will accompany the pandas during the flight. FedEx PandaOne will stop at the FedEx facility in Anchorage, Alaska to refuel, change crews and clear U.S. Customs. While flight times often vary due to weather and wind conditions, FedEx PandaOne is scheduled to touch down at Washington Dulles International Airport about 3 p.m. FedEx vehicles will transport Tian Tian and Mei Xiang from the airport to the National Zoo for the final leg of their international journey.
