( BW)(CA-VIKING-FREIGHT)(FDX) Next-day Service Between Albuquerque and
El Paso Now Available From Viking Freight
Business Editors
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1999--In a move to
speed up transit times for shippers in the Southwest, Viking Freight
Inc., the leading LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier providing western
regional transportation service and a subsidiary of FDX Corp.
(NYSE:FDX), now provides next-day service between Albuquerque, N.M.
and El Paso, Texas.
"The addition of this new overnight lane demonstrates Viking's
commitment to the Southwest," said Keith E. Lovetro, Viking's vice
president of marketing.
"Our customers asked for this level of service, and we responded
to their needs. Viking increased its presence in New Mexico and west
Texas last spring and now we're very pleased to be providing one of
the fastest and most reliable services offered between Albuquerque and
El Paso."
Albuquerque and El Paso are growing cities and both serve as a
"hub-and-spoke" for the surrounding towns in central and southern New
Mexico. Typical freight moving between Albuquerque and El Paso
includes appliances, electrical and construction equipment, food
products, printed materials, plumbing supplies, paint, fabricated
metal parts, and molded plastic parts.
Many of these goods are purchased on a daily basis and require
rapid replenishment to stores in the region.
The new Albuquerque-El Paso overnight lane brings the total
number of service center-to-service center next-day offerings from
Viking to 769 in the entire western region. Two-thirds of all the
shipments Viking transports are delivered overnight.
Additionally, to increase personal service for shippers in the
Southwest, Viking has expanded its sales team. Paul Christophersen
brings 16 years of transportation sales experience to Viking. He comes
on board as an account manager at the Albuquerque service center.
Joining the El Paso service center, also as an account manager, is
Sandra Steadham.
She has 15 years of experience in transportation sales.
