( BW)(CA-VIKING-FREIGHT)(FDX) Shippers Recognize Superior Performance with Multiple Awards for Viking Freight; From Pharmaceuticals to Phone Books, Viking is Honored for Providing Quality Service

    Business Editors

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1999--Viking Freight, Inc., the leading LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier providing western regional transportation service and a subsidiary of FDX Corp. (NYSE: FDX), has recently received awards from several shippers in recognition of its freight delivery services.
The customers presenting Viking with awards were Dayton Hudson, Glaxo Wellcome, International Paper, ITW, and Pacific Bell Directory.
"At Viking we realize how important it is to our customers and our customers' customers that shipments arrive on time, that the latest information is easily accessible, and that paperwork is accurate," said Keith E. Lovetro, Viking's vice president of marketing. "We value the trust our customers put in us to protect their reputations with their customers, and that's why we work so hard to exceed expectations. It's very gratifying to be recognized by our valued customers with these prestigious awards."

    Dayton Hudson Corporation (DHC)

Dayton Hudson honored Viking with its coveted Director's Excellence Award for overall partner excellence in 1998. Viking receives a broad range of general merchandise, such as clothes, lawn care products, dishes, and picture frames, from the west coast suppliers of DHC's Target and Mervyn's stores. The freight is then delivered by Viking to DHC's distribution centers located in California, Colorado, and Oregon.
"As our primary LTL carrier in the west, Viking goes above and beyond the call of duty for DHC," said Mike Hoyt, director of transportation for Dayton Hudson. "And as their slogan says, they really are easy to do business with."

    Glaxo Wellcome Inc.

Glaxo Wellcome awarded Viking its Carriers' Performance Best of Class Award for 100 percent claims-free service in 1998. Glaxo Wellcome, based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., has been recognizing its carrier suppliers for the past eight years, rating them on an accumulation of points for key services. Viking delivers pharmaceutical products to wholesale drug stores and retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Walgreen's throughout the western states for Glaxo Wellcome.
"We are a research-based pharmaceutical company seeking to produce treatments that meet unmet medical needs, and a critical part of that process is making sure that those medicines get to the patients who need them in a timely and efficient manner," said Ed Huggins, manager, corporate transportation distribution services for Glaxo Wellcome.

    International Paper (IP)

International Paper's vice president of logistics, William P. Crawford, presented Viking with its Regional LTL Carrier Award for Outstanding Performance for services provided in 1998. Working with IP's operational offices in Memphis, Tenn., Viking delivers a variety of IP's paper products to more than 40 IP facilities and customers throughout the west. The award was given in recognition of Viking's 98.5 percent on-time delivery performance.

Illinois Tool Works, Ramset/Red Head Division (ITW)

Viking received a Choice Partner award from ITW's Ramset/Red Head division for its 1998 performance. Headquartered in Chicago, ITW has more than 100 subsidiary companies and Viking delivers industrial fasteners for the Ramset/Red Head group. ITW evaluates LTL carriers on five criteria: on-time service percentage; billing accuracy; claims-free shipment percentage; on-time delivery of monthly service reports; and overall carrier responsiveness.
"Through Viking's support, ITW Ramset/Red Head had its seventh consecutive year of record growth," said Carla Resko, division transportation manager for ITW. "We appreciate the efforts by Viking Freight to provide the level of service that we and our customers need to be successful."

    Pacific Bell Directory

Pacific Bell Directory's Supplier Quality Alliance (SQA) program honored Viking with a silver medal for outstanding quality of service in 1998. Viking was the only transportation provider to receive the prestigious award. Viking picks up millions of pounds of new phone books during the year for Pacific Bell Directory and delivers them to distribution points throughout California and Nevada.
The criteria for the annual SQA award is based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and total quality management models and recognizes suppliers' achievement of quality goals and objectives in a number of categories. These include: quality leadership and commitment; information and analysis; strategic quality planning; quality assurance of products/services; and customer satisfaction processes and accomplishments.
The SQA silver medal not only recognized the quality of Viking's internal processes and performance, the award also focused on Viking's ability to demonstrate quality in all aspects of its business relationship with Pacific Bell Directory.
This is the third year in a row Viking has received recognition from Pacific Bell Directory, winning silver and bronze awards in the last two years, respectively. Pacific Bell Directory was one of Viking's very first customers, and the two companies have enjoyed a long and successful relationship going back to 1966, the year Viking was founded.
