( BW)(CA-VIKING-FREIGHT)(FDX) Viking Freight's Safety Record Honored
With First Place Award from the California Trucking Association
Business Editors & Transportation Writers
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--Viking Freight,
Inc., the leading LTL (less-than-truckload) carrier providing western
regional transportation service and a subsidiary of FDX Corp.
(NYSE:FDX), has been awarded first place in the California Trucking
Association's (CTA) 1999 Fleet Safety Contest.
Viking received the honor in the LTL/General Commodities/Line
Haul category for carriers that drove at least seven million miles
within California during 1998.
"Safety is the number one priority at Viking Freight," said
Douglas G. Duncan, Viking's president and CEO. "I'm extremely proud of
our employees' daily attention to all facets of safety. Our 1998
safety record of driving more than 747,000 line haul miles between
accidents in California, and 1.2 million line haul miles in the entire
western region, was Viking's best ever. I fully expect to have another
safety record-setting year in 1999."
"The CTA's recognition of our line haul operation is a tribute to
the professionals we have behind the wheel of a fleet that is
meticulously maintained," stated Viking's Vice President of Line
Operations Peter G. Kennon. "The fact that our people drive thousands
of miles safely everyday with better than 99 percent on-time service
is testament to their skill and respect for the motoring public."
The CTA uses a broad range of criteria to determine a carrier's
safety record. These include company safety policies; hiring and
training procedures for drivers; frequency and review of accidents;
and fleet maintenance. The winning carriers are selected from among
the CTA-member entrants' after a review of their records by a special
committee made up of representatives of government and regulatory
agencies including the California Highway Patrol, Department of Motor
Vehicles, and the U.S. and California Departments of Transportation.
"Each and every member of the California Trucking Association is
committed to safe and professional driving," said CTA Executive Vice
President Joel D. Anderson.
"But, each year we like to recognize those companies which have
taken that commitment to safety to an even higher level. Those
companies are made up of hard working men and women who dedicate
themselves to this demanding profession, giving the extra effort it
takes to make sure nothing is overlooked. The rest of us in this
industry -- and all of us who share the road daily with trucks owe
them a debt of gratitude for their commitment to safety."
