( BW)(FEDERAL-EXPRESS)(FDX) Federal Express Unveils Cutting-Edge API Solutions At Microsoft's Business Applications Conference '98

    Business Editors

    LAS VEGAS and MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1998--

FedEx Continues To Be First-to-Market With Innovative Shipping and
    Tracking Platforms

Federal Express Corp. (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today unveiled three Internet-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) designed to enable companies to enhance their internal productivity, increase supply chain management functionality and facilitate commerce with their customers.
FedEx ShipAPI(TM), FedEx TrackAPI(TM), and FedEx intraNetShip(TM) are beta developer tools that can be easily downloaded from the FedEx Web site, located at www.fedex.com/us. The FedEx APIs enable companies to seamlessly connect their applications to FedEx information systems via the Internet allowing them to automate the shipping and tracking process in real-time.
"With these new API solutions, FedEx continues to demonstrate its leadership and innovation within the shipping industry by offering its customers leading-edge, seamless e-commerce products," said Mike Janes, vice president, electronic commerce and logistics marketing, Federal Express Corporation. "These tools will allow customers for the first time to define their experience with FedEx by giving them the flexibility to choose the functionality that best meets their business needs," added Janes.
FedEx ShipAPI allowed Proflowers.com to develop a fully automated system for shipping and tracking flowers directly from the grower to the consumer. When a customer places an order at Proflowers.com, the FedEx API-enabled system ensures on-time delivery by automatically forwarding shipment and billing data appropriately.
"With FedEx ShipAPI, we are able to expedite the order/delivery process, eliminate the middleman and significantly reduce our overhead," said Bill Strauss, President of Proflowers.com. "As a result, we are able to offer our customers the freshest possible flowers at terrific prices."

FedEx ShipAPI
FedEx ShipAPI implements public-key encryption technology and allows customers to seamlessly integrate FedEx's shipping and tracking functionality into their Internet-enabled product or service, thereby eliminating redundant programming. In addition, FedEx ShipAPI returns all shipment scan data for on-screen display or storage in a transaction database.

FedEx TrackAPI
As with FedEx ShipAPI, FedEx TrackAPI enables users to check the progress of a shipment instantly, track multiple packages simultaneously and uses public-key encryption software to help protect confidential data information as well as verify data integrity and authentication.
Both FedEx ShipAPI and TrackAPI include source code and sample programs in C++, Visual Basic, Java and HTML that help expedite development efforts.

FedEx intraNetShip
Rounding out the three solutions, FedEx intraNetShip is a complete HTML software package utilizing the API technology. Designed to work within a company's intranet, customers can ship globally direct from their desktop computer from the U.S. to more than 170 countries worldwide. Additional features include an activity report, access control to shipping permitting only authorized users to ship, centralized reporting options, instant on-line tracking, a cancel shipment option, and an email notification system that allows users to proactively alert recipients of incoming shipments.
"We are delighted to be teaming up with FedEx at our inaugural Business Applications Conference," said James Utzschneider, director of line of business evangelism at Microsoft. "FedEx's API applications enable corporate developers and customers to integrate cutting-edge business solutions and tools within their existing networks."
FedEx's API solutions were designed so customers could choose the way they interface with FedEx as well as their customers. With no FedEx hardware necessary, and having these three new API solutions work seamlessly with Windows 95/NT, Sun Solaris operating system, Web servers and Web browsers, users can customize their system so it efficiently and easily takes full advantage of all the product features and benefits at zero cost to their business.
