MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--Federal Express
Corp. (FedEx) (NYSE: FDX), the world's largest express transportation
company, has been named as one of the 100 Best Companies in America
for working mothers by Working Mother Magazine. The announcement, made
today, will be highlighted in the October issue of the publication.
FedEx was one of the 100 companies chosen from thousands of entries
because of its on-going commitment to employees and family-friendly
policies.

our employees, in this case the thousands of working mothers in the
FedEx family," said Dave Bronczek, chief operating officer, FedEx.
"This award speaks to our People-Service-Profit (P-S-P) philosophy,
that motivated and conscientious people will provide the superior
professional service to ensure continued growth."
The winners were selected by the following six criteria: pay,
opportunity for women to advance, child care assistance, flexible work
arrangements, work/life supports such as counseling and support
groups, and other family-friendly benefits such as extended maternity
and parental leave, as well as adoption aid and elder care.
"FedEx believes in promoting from within so we've created one of
the strongest professional development programs in the nation. Women
account for 15 percent of the senior management team at FedEx," said
Karen Clayborne, FedEx's first woman appointed to the position of
general counsel.
Some of FedEx's programs that support working mothers include:
-- discounts at day care centers,
-- child care safety kits,
-- child and elder care resource and referral services through
the LifeWorks program,
-- flexible work schedules,
-- women's forums,
-- and the same comprehensive benefits package given to all
other employees, both full- and part-time.
Almost 30 percent of FedEx managers and 43 percent of FedEx
professionals are women. FedEx also employs 146 female pilots.
FedEx has also been recognized by Fortune magazines's The 100
Best Companies to Work for in America (1998) and The 50 Best
Companies for Asians, Blacks and Hispanics (1998).
