Printable Version FedEx’s largest solar-powered hub worldwide is under construction at Cologne Bonn Airport

We have just celebrated a key milestone in the continuing development of our European logistics facilities during the official topping out ceremony for the new FedEx Central and Eastern Europe hub at Cologne Bonn Airport.
Approximately 140 million Euros are being invested by FedEx and the airport authorities in the new 50,000 square metres complex which, when completed in 2010, will provide employment for 450 people. Extensive new ramp, freight and sort facilities will be backed up by associated state-of-the-art operating procedures including a fully automated sort system. Our move from Frankfurt to Cologne will enable us not only to maintain and enhance service levels within Central and Eastern Europe and the EU, and onwards to all our global markets, but will also allow us to extend the entire range of services we offer.
An important and significant feature of the hub will be a power system fed by solar panels with a total area of 16,000 square meters installed on the roof of the building. The new plant’s output will be capable of producing about 1.3 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 370 households, and when it comes on stream will make the new logistics centre our largest solar-powered gateway worldwide. In line with our continuing commitment to pursuing environmentally responsible policies a wide range of energy-saving features are also being designed into restaurant, working and public areas within the hub.
Full details of FedEx’s wide-ranging approach to the reduction of our carbon footprint, including the adoption of specific policies concerning not only offices and warehouses but also all vehicles, aircraft and packaging, can be found in our “ FedEx 2008 Global Citizenship Report “.
